This is supposed to make them contenders

There are reports surfacing that Starbury will be joining the Celtics.

That still depends largely on Marbury's ability to negotiate his release from the Knicks after weeks of fruitless and oft-contentious buyout talks, but sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com this week that Boston is Marbury's preferred destination if he manages to become a free agent and that the Celtics are indeed hopeful of signing him.

Celtics general manager Danny Ainge did not immediately respond to a request for comment on a New Year's Day holiday for the entire league and has generally refused to address the possibility of signing Marbury. Yet it's believed that the Celtics' concerns about their depth, after losing James Posey and P.J. Brown from last season's title team, have swelled noticeably since they followed up the best 29-game start in NBA history at 27-2 by losing three of the next four games on the road.

This is the dumbest move the Celtics could possibly make. Hopeful of signing him? What in the wide world of sports is goin on? A declining point guard who shoots first goin to the champion Celtics?
Several teams that could use Marbury have passed so why should the Celtics take him? It might be cheap but Marbury isn't exactly a safe bet. He hasn't been a sure thing since he was drafted in 96. He has gotten himself dealt from two teams.
What are your thought, readers? Should the Celtics take him

New 49ers head coach Mike Singletary has relieved Mike Martz of his job as offensive coordinator.  Martz, you saw the post-game interview right?  Don't get out of pocket with Coach Singletary or he might hurt your slim behind.

Mike, you'll get another job because you were the mastermind of the Greatest Show on Turf.  All you need is two top notch wideouts, a good slot guy, a laser point quarterback, and a hybrid half back/receiver.  No tall order, right?

Mike Martz, you are dismissed!

As mentioned in a previous post, Bill Cowher is the top coaching candidate.

Bill Cowher's phone will be ringin non-stop now.  He sat out a season,
made analyst dollars, and can now pull a Parcells and get total control
of a franchise in disarray.  Stank-0 will continue this thought in a
later post.

And why not pay him top dollar?  He's a Super Bowl winning head coach and a long-tenured coach.  Stank-0's boy, M0yo, mentioned Dennis Green as a potential candidate for the Lions.  He knows the NFC North after coaching the Vikings.

Another name is Brian Billick, also a Super Bowl winning quarterback.  Unfortunately alot of retreads will get second chances this time around.  There are too many vacancies and too many conservative teams to bring in some fresh blood.

Throw another name on here as well, Mike Shanahan.  He just came up on the big board of coaches.

Mike Shanahan via ESPN

Of all the names to get sent packing, this one is a true shocker. The Denver Broncos have relieved Mike Shanahan of his coaching duties. The Chiefs fan in Stank-0 is kinda glad to see a rival lose a sense of stability. Evidently, Shanahan made enough enemies in the Mile High city to be sent packing.

Shanahan will not be unemployed long if he wants to work. A franchise needing some winning ways will search him out.

A complete toss up

The three man weave for the 2008 Defensive Player of the Year is tight. Stank-0 mentioned the 3 contenders previously. Let's break down their cases.

DeMarcus Ware: In his favor: 2008-2009 sack leader. Dallas' D line differencemaker. A rising force. Knock: His team flamed out down the stretch and missed the playoffs.

Joey Porter: In his favor: High sack total for 2008-2009. Leader/heart and soul of the revamped Miami Dolphins D. Knock: Won't shut the h**l up!

Ed Reed: In his favor: Widely regarded as the best safety in football. Ball hawk. Defensive playmaker. High interception total for 2008-2009. Broke his own record for the longest T.INT (interception returned for a TD) Knock: Plays on an already good D so he has to outshine Ray and TSuggs to get some buzz.

Stank-0's gut tells him that Joey Porter will snag it for no other reason than the turnaround factor.

File this under obviously

Matt Ryan ran away with the offensive rookie of the year. This was the exact same thing when Adrian Peterson won ROY. It was in the blog before the reboot. In any case, Ryan deserves it.

Stank-0 called him a bum when he was drafted and the kid just played. Very well.

Congratulations to 2008 Offensive Rookie of the Year Matt Ryan!

Let's get to the award everyone is talkin about Defensive Player of the Year. Who? DeMarcus Ware, Joey Porter, or Ed Reed? This will be the subject of a later post.

Dismissed, three's company

Eric Mangini via ESPN

Stank-0 just saw that three head coaches were pinkslipped today. This is the latest in the Dismissed series. The three coaches let go are: Eric Mangini, Romeo Crennel, and Rod Marinelli. The only firing that truly surprises Stank-0 is Mangini. The J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS were a game away from the playoffs with a 38 year old quarterback in a tough division.

Romey Rome
was the subject of an earlier post. The Browns did so poorly that someone had to be the fall guy and he was the one to be sacrificed on the chopping block. The good thing about all of this is that there was been a housecleaning. Quick and dirty.

Marinelli's firing was predetermined after the Lions hit 0-10. The GM was fired much earlier in the season so...it only makes sense to clean house wholesale. The Lions also swept away all the upper management from this God awful season.

Bill Cowher's phone will be ringin non-stop now. He sat out a season, made analyst dollars, and can now pull a Parcells and get total control of a franchise in disarray. Stank-0 will continue this thought in a later post.

UPDATE!: Romey Rome please exit with some of your dignity intact. Please! Crennel is sayin he would continue on with the Browns in some other capacity if the new head coach wanted him to stay. You must be 4 kinds of crazy to think the new head coach wants your 24-40 experience around his new regime. This is just pathetic.

Surprise, surprise!

DolphinsRich Kane/US Presswire

There is no one in the league, Miami included, that expected this type of turnaround in a single season.  The Fins were a project team, requiring 3 years to right the ship.  Now they are playoff bound.  Adding to the luster, is that the Patriots were left out.  Now if you remember, they lost in the Super Bowl, and only Seattle (losers to the Steelers in Super Bowl XL) is the only team to even make the playoffs after losing in the Super Bowl in the last few years.

Congratulations to the Miami Wildcats.  Chad Pennington, HOOOLLLA!  Just don't turn into the Browns of 2009

Crennel will not survive the Browns God awful season.  The GM was shown the door as well, which leads to Crennel's service no longer being needed.  Now if only the Chiefs would consider doing the same with Edwards

Romey Rome, this past season was not your fault.  You were the victim of high expectations.  Obviously so, after the season the Browns had a year ago, fans and "experts" were expecting them to battle for the division title.  Instead, Derek Anderson regressed to the point that Brady Quinn looked like a savior until he started playin regular.  Poor Browns.

What is the answer?
