NFL draft live bloggin!

So the Detroit Lions selected Stafford as expected.  Stank-0 will be on live for the first 10 picks or at least until the Chiefs pick.

The NFL draft hats are horrible.  The Rams have 7 minutes and counting to make their selection.  Now the analysts are circle jerkin how great Stafford will be.  Picture time for Stafford, his lady, the fam, and the Lions brass.

The Rams now have a 2 minute warning.  Do they take another linemen?  The analysts are saying take best versus need.  Stank-0 disagrees.

We are comin under 1 minute.  Thirty seconds.

The Rams' time is now up.  Their selectionis forthcoming.  Here we go...the Rams have selected Jason Smith, OT from Baylor.  Stank-0 approves this pick.  Bolster your line and your team will prosper.  Picture time with the fam.

The Chiefs now have 7 mins.  Stank-0 thinks they should take a defensive player.  The question is who to take?  Orakpo, Curry, or Jackson?

Three minutes and counting.  The analysts are thinkin the Chiefs are drafting for D.  The pick is in...the Chiefs have selected...Tyson Jackson DE/LSU.  He reteams with Glenn Dorsey.  He will be workable DE and help bolster the 3-4 scheme.  With that Stank-0 has stopped caring have a good day.

UPDATE!  Had to jump in here.  Contrary to the "experts" the C-Hawks grabbed Aaron Curry, OLB/ Wake Forest.  How far does Sanchez fall?  The next pick the Browns do not have a QB problem either.

The Browns now have under 5 minutes left.  The analysts are slobbin on Sanchez.  How did he learn where the bodies are buried?  He was sinkin like a stone and then the only name we heard was Sanchez like he was the 2nd coming of Johnny U.  Stank-0 would pass on a guy with only 16 starts in college himself.  Is Sanchez this years' Brady Quinn?

A Lakers-Jazz commerical.  Should have showed Booz bangin on Pasol.

The Jets have made a deal to move up for the Browns pick.  It looks like they will grab Sanchez here.  Wonder what was the compensation?  The analysts are fallin over themselves to shine up Sanchez' nob.  Stank-0 can't co-sign this Sanchez sensationalism.

Sanchez put on the Jets cap about 2 mins before the decision came from Goodell.  It's official the Jets take Sanchez.

Sanchez=Brees?  Steve Young STFU, please!  Stank-0 liked this draft better when it was on mute.

The Bengals have less than 6 minutes.  Stank-0 thinks they will take up the entire time talkin about Sanchez's future Hall of Fame career.

The Browns get DE Abram Elam, QB Brett Ratliff, DE Kenyon Coleman, 2009 2nd round pick and 2009 1st round pick (17th overall).  Stank-0 is convinced that the Browns got the better end of this deal.  Those players can be dealt and the picks can be dealt.  That deal could reverberate for the Browns into 2010 and 2011 or even later.

The Bengals have selected...Andre Smith OT/Alabama.  That's a good pick.  That line folded like a wrinkled suit.  Carson Palmer should be very happy about this pick.  The "experts" are pickin apart this pick.  The Bengals needed to fix the line.  This could keep Ocho Cinco in town, although he will get double teamed now.  Housh wears C-Hawks green.

The Raiders at #7 are on the clock now.  Al Davis is infatuated with speed so Maclin?  They need help everywhere.  Under 4 minutes for Oakland.  The pick is in.  The Raiders have taken...Darius Heyward-Bey WR, Maryland.  HUGE SURPRISE!  Hey-Bey over Crab?  Stank-0 is shocked.  Man, he was graded as an F by Kiper and McShay.  Al Davis likes his skill players because he keeps drafting them.  They are skewering Hey-Bey mercilessly.  McShay:  "Bust."

Jacksonville is on the clock under 6 minutes as the #8 pick.  The analysts think that Crab's gonna move off very soon.  Michael Smith predicts Eugene Monroe OT from VA.  The Jags are comin under 1 minute.  The pick is in...the Jags have taken...Eugene Monroe OT, UVA.  Smart pick.  This is a OT heavy first 10 picks.  Maybe teams are realizing the value of linemen.  SPS is on his game.

The Packers are on the clock now with the #9 pick.  They are under 7 minutes.  B.J. Raji DT/BC was shown on the cell.  Maybe?  It looks like the Packers have selected B.J. Raji DT/BC.  He will be integral for the Pack's 3-4 defense.  The Packers have taken... B.J. Raji DT/BC.  It's official.

The 49ers are on the clock with the #10 pick.  Crab may move here.  Under 7 minutes.  The debate for the 9ers is Orakpo or Crab?  Crab is on the phone so...maybe Crab?  The pick is in the 9ers have taken...Michael Crabtree WR/ Texas Tech.  Will he fit in with Coach Singletary?  With that my day is done.  Enjoy yourselves.

Stank-0 is goin to call this now.  There is no way that the Lions will get an adequate return on investment for what they are payin Stafford.  His deal is 6 yrs @ $78M with $41.7M guaranteed.  Brady and Manning aren't gettin this type of guaranteed money, and they have rings.

Stank-0 just don't see it.  How will Stafford be in a place to excel?  The Lions have one player of note, Calvin Johnson.  A toilet paper O/D line because they ain't sh*t.  SPS said it best, get some line help.  Oh well, Stank-0 hopes all that money will make things better for you in Detroit.

Pullin a Cutler

Filed under: , , by: Anonymous

Word on the street is that Jason Campbell will request a trade if the Skins draft a QB. This will get very interesting. This sounds like a test of wills and the player usually doesn't win.

I guess Campbell has finally had enough. Frankly, I think Campbell is good once you let him get familiar with system instead of changing the system season after season. There are a few teams that would be interested, namely the Raiders, Jets, Bucs, Titans, Broncos, and Lions. Hell, even the Vikings might try to jump on Campbell.

Universal Mind Control

In the days approaching the NFL Draft prognosticators have the Good Ole Lions picking ROCKET ARM Stafford from Georgia. In the last few years which Number One QBs have changed the teams that they have ended up on immediately? That answer is very very few.

In looking at the top 5 QBs from last year (QB RATING), Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Chad Pennington, Kurt Warner, and my BOY Phillip Rivers (Go Chargers!!!!) , the only one of these guys that was a number one draft pick was Peyton Manning. In that list Peyton is arguably one of the best to ever play and it took him many years to develop into the talent he is today.

I say all that to say this. When will GM's learn? Franchise QBs are groomed and built within a system. They dont grow on trees, they are not available immediately after college, and they take time to mature, like a fine wine. I will agree last season was weird with Flacco, and Ryan coming out of the gates and doing a very good job. But no one thought at University of Delaware, and Boston College respectively that either guy would start this past season and do what they did.

This post is entitled Universal Mind Control from this glamorous thought that one great QB will make your team great forever. Get over it. There is not a Peyton Manning in this draft. Joe Montana retired a Chief, Steve Young is on ESPN, Elway is coaching / fathering, Randal Cunningham is somewhere, and Warren Moon is probably yelling at someone.

Please look to the real rocks of the draft. Offensive lineman. History has shown us that rock solid lineman drafted in the first round last for 10 or more years and typically produce many Pro Bowls and help to win championships. Primadonna QBs that go number one often end up more like Ryan Leaf and Alex Smith. Great potential and less than effective performances on the field. We need to look more at the Jonathan Ogdens and the Orlando Pace's of the world. If you are going to spend the money in the down economy, dont let the hype fool you into investing into something that may not pay dividends for years to come.

Please think above the song, "You know you like it.... its calling your name"

Be like Pookie in CB4, let the real players convince you, "It keeps calling me...... that Crack just keeps calling me man"

Draft responses

Werdsworth chimed in on some draft bits and pieces. He specifically asked for some response so here Stank-0 goes. Werds said,

"The question becomes was the Giants' offense a function of Plax drawing double coverage or Eli slowly progressing into a future franchise QB? You know how I feel about that."

Indeed, we do. An NFL offense is an amazingly complex organism, to reduce it down to simple cause and effect is disingenuous. Sure Plax was very helpful, but that isn't the sole reason. The GMen looked eerily similar to the 2001 Patriots in winning that ring. They relied on their defense to get them there. Good enough, Werds? Let's move to the next part.

Werds said,

"So what should the Lions do with the #1 pick?"

Werds, you sure don't make it easy for a playa. The problem is that you only have one pick and a myriad of problems to address. It would make the most logical sense to deal the pick and get a grip of picks to start the long process of puttin the Lions back together again. Now does Stank-0 think the Lions will do this, of course not. It would be highly unorthodox to deal the 1st pick.

Werds, said,

Should the Skins draft another QB to make it three now?

This question answers itself. HELL NAW! Stank-0 wrote about Campbell last season. Stank-0 was sold then and he's sold now. Campbell has a QB coach-turned-head coach and he has helped Campbell's progression. If and Stank-0 says that very judiciously, Campbell is not the franchise QB for the Redskins then give Brennan a chance before you go lookin for another QB.

Draft History

OTL looked at the 2004 NFL Draft and focused on the Eli Manning drama.

As far as QBs in that draft, clearly Big Ben is the alpha male of the group. I'm still not sold on Eli being a franchise QB. When the GMen's offense got Plaxico'd, we saw the same old Eli.

The question becomes was the Giants' offense a function of Plax drawing double coverage or Eli slowly progressing into a future franchise QB? You know how I feel about that. What say you Stank-0? M0yo? SPS?
-----------
Regarding the 2009 draft, I'm also up in the air about drafting a QB when my O line folds like a lawn chair. If I were the Lions, I would shop the #1 pick for a rack of picks down the line, either this year or next year. The Iggles have continually bolstered both lines which is a recipe for success. Your franchise needs to either be able to protect or create pressure.

One of the analysts made a good point about big arms, i.e. JaMarcus Russell, etc. Scouts fall in love with the big arm, but don't look at decision-making skills and accuracy. I will say this, Russell has the tools but is hampered by a senile owner and dysfunctional franchise. Let him go elsewhere before we label him.

So what should the Lions do with the #1 pick? Stank-0? M0yo? SPS?
--------
One last point, what has Jason Campbell done to make the Redskins front office doubt him? First, they wanted Jay Cutler now they are talkin to Mark Sanchez. Um...the Skins have not only Campbell but Colt Brennan as well. Why collect QBs? At least let Campbell learn a single offensive system beyond one year before you start trying to replace him. Six Flags Snyder, do better!

Should the Skins draft another QB to make it three now? SPS? M0yo? Stank-0?

The Draft

Also known as the NFL draft. I work too much to go position by position and team by team. With the attention that QBs are drawing right now, it's the perfect time to analyze the QBs in the draft. Let's start with the biggest name in the draft.

Matthew Stafford

(+)'s: Clearly the best arm in the this class. Having watched a few Georgia Bulldogs games last year, Stafford had an arm that could excite. I wouldn't quite say he has a JaMarcus Russell-type arm but he's not too shabby. As "experts" like to say, can make all the throws. Game experience. He is seen to have franchise QB potential.

(-)'s: Not terribly mobile. He could shuffle a lil bit in the pocket but didn't show an amazing ability to keep broken plays alive sufficiently long enough. Decisionmaking needs work. Didn't seem to stand up to well in the face of the blitz and different coverages seemed to confuse him a bit too easily.

Projected: 1st round, 1st pick. First QB taken in the draft.

QB most similar to:...Based on his physical gifts I would say Matt Ryan. Stank-0 was not terribly sold on Ryan when he was drafted last year, and I feel the same way about Stafford. Scouts are droolin all over this kid.

I will give the rest of the writers a chance to evaluate the other QBs in this year's draft.

P.S. I had to change the name. Stank-0 informed me with SPS comin on board that's alot of S-names on the roster. So now I am Werdsworth...no Punchline.

Draft talk

Filed under: , by: Stankoniforous 0ne

Ah the annual rite of passage for minor league football players scholar-athletes, the NFL draft. The Big XII has the potential to have quite a few high profile players selected early. Let's run down the draft suspects.

According to the word on the street, John Parker Wilson is the projected #1 pick. ??? Did Stank-0 miss something during his hiatus? Wilson didn't wow but he didn't disappoint and that's enough to get drafted.

Michael Oher is also a high draft pick. He was considered NFL ready back in high school. Whomever gets him has a left tackle for the next 7-10 years. Period!

Tim Tebow is considered a middle rounder, which is correct ISO. His game won't translate smoothly to the NFL. There is talk of converting him to a tight end or half back or having him in Wildcat formations. That sounds too much like a gimmick player and you can ask Reggie Bush how it feels to be a gimmick player. Bush had to change his game, so will Tebow.

Sam Bradford looks the most NFL-ready. He has pocket presence, can move around to buy time, is accurate, has the toughness factor, and is big enough so scouts won't hate on his size.

Colt McCoy has the tools to play, but there's this lingering doubt in Stank-0's mind about him. He played well in the big games but something is naggin about his game. He does run alot for a quarterback.

Graham Harrell is the only college quarterback to approach the number of attempts an NFL quarterback will make Sunday after Sunday. The knock on Harrell is he's never really been pressured with that mammoth offensive line he played behind and he put up fantasy numbers. Few big number quarterbacks make it in the NFL, just ask Tommy Chang and every other quarterback to ever play at Hawaii and Texas Tech.

Michael Crabtree is the most complete receiver in college football. He's Andre Johnson (while he was at Miami) with a bigger frame. Stank-0 thinks Crabtree is sophomore so he still has another season, correct Stank-0 if he is wrong. As a resident in Big XII country, Stank-0 would like another season to watch him play ball.

Since Stank-0 gave one soph a shout out might as well spotlight Dez Bryant, receiver at Oklahoma State. If Crab is the best receiver in college football, Bryant would make a good case for #2. Bryant had a few games where he could not be single covered. It was not physically possible.

Anyone get left out, drop a comment.

UPDATE!: Michael Crabtree redshirted early in his career so he is eligible for the draft.
