The St. Louis Rams have hybridized it the best, to the tune of a Super Bowl closing in on a dime ago. It's like they essentially took the college spread offense and made it suitable for the NFL.
The 2007 New England Patriots essentially perfected what the Rams created in 1999.
As for defenses, the latest creation was from Buddy Ryan, creator of the 46.
Four six uses four linemen, 3 linebackers and 4 defensive backs. (This looks alot like the 4-3.)
Most defenses utilize a variation of the 3-4 and 4-3. The three four is a variation of the Oklahoma/50 defense, which had 5 linemen and 2 linebackers.
The four three is 4 linemen and 3 linebackers. It was first used coaches like Tom Landry.
It has long passed time for new offenses and defenses in the NFL.
It may be slowly be happening in terms of the tight ends starting to resemble wide receivers and being lined up in the slot.
On the defensive side, the linebackers and safeties are multi-positional as well.
Could A-11 be used sparingly a la Wildcat in the NFL?
