Are the new swimsuits an unfair advantage

Honestly, it was only a matter of time. Stank-0 remembers the uproar over the suits during the Beijing Olys.  Stank-0 had extensive discussions about the Cube during the 2008 Olympiad.

The article talks about how the swimming federation is mulling a ban on these new supersuits.

The ban on polyurethane suits was ratified, as were the guidelines for how much skin the racing suits can cover. When the new rules go into effect, suits will stretch only between the waist and the knees for men and from the shoulders to the knees for women. And yet, there is no firm date for when the reforms will take effect.

Other swimmers feel more strongly about it.

“It’s sort of like the baseball era in steroids,” the American breaststroker Eric Shanteau said. “Some people are like, ‘It’s fine,’ and some people say it’s cheating.”

Stank-0 wonders as does the NYT writer how much of this is sour grapes because the Arena X-Glide has bested the Speedo LZR Racer.

It does bring up an excellent question, does a skin tight, water buoyant, streamlining suit fundamentally change the sport?  Isn't that like all the gear that baseball and football players wear?  On the one hand, swimming is a sport of hundredths of seconds so any little advantage will make a world of difference (sounds like baseball).

Almost there

One more hurdle has been removed to M. Vick's return to the NFL. The only thing left is a Barbara Walters special where he breaks down, cries, and "shows remorse."

Stank-0 ain't read a thing about his return, he just saw a Facebook status documenting his conditional reinstatement. That's not even the biggest obstacle. Now he needs a team willing to take the heat in signing him. Off the top, the Raiders and Lions come to mind. They are horrifically bad.

Organizations with a strong personality in the front office: Patriots (unlikely) and Dolphins (improbable). Stank-0 can't think of a team that could properly utilize Vick. Right now he would prolly get some Gilbert Arenas' minutes. There's no way he would be in NFL shape in time for the season, learn a new playbook, new packages, new formations, new jargon, and get the timing down with his receivers and tight ends. Stank-0 don't see it.

Stank-0 won't pretend to speak for the other bloggers here, but uh...LET HIM PLAY!

That is all.

The anti-Weis

You all know Mr. Weis right. You may not know the name but you know the frame. Real quick, Vince Carter, 2000 Olys. Weis was the guy whom Vince jumped over. Now you know who it is don'tcha. Mr. Weis was drafted by the Knicks but never left Europe to come to this side of the pond.

That was the same worry the T-Wolves had about Ricky Rubio until now. See I was unclear about a few things surrounding Rubio, like how long the Wolves own his rights. That's been cleared up. The Wolves own his NBA rights as long as he is playing pro ball.

My opinion was that Rubio needed to come over here and prove he can play. Sure he showed and proved in the Olympics, however, those were international rules. Any time you can goaltend, we have a problem. Call me jingoistic all you want but watching a bunch of big men shoot treys is not basketball. God created big men so they could mix it up in the paint, dream shake, shoot off glass, toss layups off the backboard, wag fingers to the crowd, throw up the Q, and drop step on each other. PERIOD.

Now Rubio gets to show NBA fans he's not some Euro Jason Williams. I don't even think he's on Jason's level to perfectly honest. Until Rubio pulls some elbow pass type sh!t, he can't see Jason.

Time to go our seperate ways

Stank-0 has been mulling this decision and understands the difficulty in making this step, but Stank-0 has been pushed to the edge.

Stank-0 has decided to stop actively watching and reading ESPN. That means if Stank-0 is in a public place with ESPN on, there's nothing he can do about it. [Author's note: Except actively hate on the network. HATE! HATE! HATE!] Now, Stank-0 understands there are extensive links and urls to stories from ESPN on this blog. This all stems from either perceived racism or favoritism on the part of the Worldwide Leader in Sports. Let's give some context.

By now you've all heard about Ben Roethlisberger's allegation. Well the entire sporting world wrote, dissected, and discussed the matter except for...you guessed it ESPN. There's word that a "do not report" memo came down from Bristol. Then the weak-kneed explanation about it not being a resolved matter.

Yet, other players (with more melanin in their skin) have not received the same treatment. They treat Ocho Cinco's excessive celebration TDs like it's the fall of Western civilization. Don't get Stank-0 started on T.O., who by the way has never been arrested, charged with a crime, or on CourtTV. We don't have to go very far back to look at Matt Jones, who was moving ye-yo (that's cocaine to the uninformed) and was still able to play games until it was seemingly spotlighted by one Joey Porter.

ESPN's silence on Ben's legal snafu was the camel that broke the straw's back. Either drag every player through the "ESPN legal opinion" ringer or quit targeting specific players.

This ESPN ban will be difficult because Stank-0 vowed to dump the NBA until Seattle got a new team and he has slipped in that regard. So it is time to do what Stank-0 said he will do.

Is Stank-0 overreacting?

Either or?

This was inspired from reading about Griffey here. It was a post about Griffey not getting his due respect, which is very true.

Anyway, the post also referenced Jesus Shuttlesworth jumper. So, my question to you my good readers is this. Which is better, Junior's swing or Allen's jumper? Who's the better hitter, Junior or Pujols (we are talking holistically here)

Better dunker, Nique or Vince? Reignman or Stoudemire? Kemp and Amar'e are essentially the same player. Highlight reel dunker, no real jumper to speak, catch most lobs thrown in the vicnity of the basket.

Better QB, Montana or Young? Montana or Manning? Young or Brady?

Sid the Kid or Ovechkin?

You paid who how much to do what?

That's exactly how I felt after reading this. Why keep Nash? His best years are behind him. I won't even go in because the comments did it perfectly.

From the comments section:

They traded Joe Johnson for Boris freaking Diaw, turned Shawn Marion into Shaq,
then into Ben Wallace's dead corpse and Sasha "I can't hit a jumpshot to save my
life" Pavlovic. They than chased a very good coach in D'antoni out of town for an
amateur in Terry Porter. And they will probably lose Amar'e this summer as well.

I couldn't have said it better myself. So what was the Shaq experiment about anyway? Look, I implore loyalty, but Nash will be 38 when the deal is finished. That's too old for a major league DH let alone an NBA point guard. Kerr, you do realize that Nash will be expected to play defense, right?

I'm lost.

More on Gatti

The police are increasingly focusing on his wife, and for good reason.

Lead investigator Moises Teixeira told The Associated Press on Monday nothing is being ruled out but he is certain the woman acted by herself.

"It was technically impossible for a third person to have been in the flat," where Gatti was found dead early Saturday, Teixeira said. "The investigation isn't finished, but we continue to think she did this alone."

Stank-0 has watched enough Law & Order to know the police always look at the spouse or significant other.  She said she awoke at 6a to find him, but the investigators said the body had been dead for 4 hours.  Something don't fit.

Now they did have a disagreement and Gatti in a drunken state did push her down, causing some bruises.  Spousal abuse ain't cute, however, if you are so mad you are contemplating ending someone's life....WALK AWAY!!!

Another thing, you professional athletes need to put these women through a vetting process more extensive than "You got a man?"  Just cause she cute, don't mean she ain't crazy.  You got money do a background check, for real!  What's $50?!  If she got more than 3 arrests or the police have shown up at the cut more than 6 times, pass on by playa.

More sad news

I know I been gone for a second, and unfortunately this is what my first post back is.

Arturo Gatti was found dead in a Brazilian hotel room. Gatti was in some of the most exciting fights in recent boxing.

Gatti was a true warrior. His face often looked like mince meat after the bout, but the fans loved him for it. Gatti was like the KG of boxing, he was either all-go or no-go.

Obviously, his bouts with Ward are what he is known for.

Last week was difficult in sports and I imagine this week will be equally so. Two thousand nine will go down as the year some truly legendary figures left this plane for a higher existence.

RIP Arturo "Thunder" Gatti, may your soul have eternal sleep.

NBA deals galore!

Filed under: , by: Stankoniforous 0ne

Another NBA megadeal. The Matrix has been sent to Dallas.  This is what happens when a NBA player in a good situation doesn't realize he's in a good deal.  Marion went from PHX to MIA to T.O to Dallas.  He hasn't been the same since he left PHX.  It's deeper than that.

Under the sign-and-trade deal, the Orlando Magic traded Hedo Turkoglu to the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors sent Marion, Kris Humphries, Nathan Jawai and cash considerations to Dallas, while also sending a future second round draft pick to the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Mavericks in turn shipped Jerry Stackhouse and cash considerations to the Grizzlies and Devean George and Antoine Wright to Toronto, while the Grizzlies dealt Greg Buckner to Dallas.

The inclusion of Jawai to the Mavericks was a new wrinkle in the deal. In an earlier version, the Raptors were to send Quincy Douby to the Grizzlies instead.

That's a deal for real!  Bottom line some moving parts got moved around so the Matrix and Turkish Jordan could get moved.  Let's move on.  Hopefully the Mavs can utilize Marion to his full usefulness.
--------------------------------------------

The second half of our show focuses on Booz. He is bound for the City of Wind.

Another major multi-team trade might be looming in the NBA with the Portland Trail Blazers, Utah Jazz and Chicago Bulls having discussed a deal that would be headlined by Carlos Boozer and Kirk Hinrich, according to NBA front-office sources.

Let it be known that Stank-0 is a fan of fellow Kansas product Capt. Kirk.  Just to put that out there, however, the Bulls backcourt was extremely crowded with the addition of Rose.  It was inevitable for someone to get shipped.  BG is already in a Pistons uni so Stank-0 is perplexed that they are trying to move Hinrich as well.  Who does that leave to play off guard/shooting guard?  Is Deng a 2 or a 3?

Let's take a look at the roster shall we.

At guard, they have Hinrich, Lindsey Hunter, DeMarcus Nelson, Anthony Roberson, Rose, and John Salmons.  No eye popping talent outside of Rose on that list.  Behold, a continuing problem, too many forwards.

At F: Deng, Taj Gibson, Linton Johnson III, James Johnson, Joakim Noah, John Salmons (G-F), Tim and Tyrus Thomas.

At this point, the Bulls are undermanned at guard and overstaffed at forward.  They traded one problem for another.

Too many people all playing the same position and now you add one more forward in Booz.  Time to start dealing some forwards.  Deng, Tyrus, and Salmons are keepers.  The rest?  Trade bait!

This blog, Sports on my Mind, is Stank-0's new crack. The writer goes in depth about steriods, it's a good read.  What Stank-0 wants to highlight is this tidbit right here.

Today, 102 names from that 2003 report — most of them American and white — get a pass. Today, Randy Johnson — because presumptions of innocence are to be enjoyed by white players — gets a pass. Today, local reports providing evidence of use by Jeff Bagwell and Mike Piazza — are not picked up as stories at the national level. Meanwhile, well-documented liars like Andy Pettitte still get high-praise for their honesty.

Did you catch that?  Jeff Bagwell and Mike Piazza might have used!  Why hasn't this been trumpeted all over ESPN?  FSN?  ABC Sports?  Now Stank-0 isn't sure about Andy Pettite's penchant for dishonest so....we'll let that slide.

SOMM does bring up a good question.  ARod and Manny's results were leaked, so why haven't there been repercussions and consequences?  *Waiting on the conspiracy theorists*

MLB (read: Bud Selig) you aren't making this any easier for yourself.  You have a few options. 1.  Bring the wrath of highly paid, fine-Italian-custom-made-suit-wearing-attorney-wrath down on the leaks.  2.  Give us the rest of the names, and deal with it all at once.  3.  Continue letting high profile names slowly leak out over the next 3-5 years.  Stank-0 didn't want to veer off course.

Again, Sports on my mind has some good writing, peep it.

[Shout out to Sports on my mind]

In memoriam

In utterly shocking news, Steve "Air" McNair was found fatally wounded in a Nashville condo.  It all sounds so utterly drab and simple yet it never is.  McNair was found with an acquaintance whom the police are not releasing details on.  There's speculation this is his side chick.  Stank-0 does not deal in speculation.

This death is a blow to the NFL.  McNair was only 36.  A 3-time Pro Bowl QB, a co-MVP with Peyton in 2003, led his team to the Super Bowl in 99 against the Rams, and became the face of the Titans.  That still doesn't say it all.

Stank-0 remembers vividly that McNair played hurt with the aid of his wife (a registered nurse).  He couldn't even practice but his wife had him ready for game time.  He did this for more than one season as well.

The world is reeling right now with the string of high profile people who have demised and McNair's passing does not help the situation.  The NFL is better with you having played in it, RIP Steve McNair.

Deals and steals

Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon (BG) going to the Pistons is a deal.  It helps the youth movement in Motown but doesn't move them up the pecking order in the East.  The Pistons are clearly in rebuilding mode.  It's time to blow this up and start over.

Speaking of the Pistons, there are rumors swirling that Sheed is Beantown bound.  How will he co-exist with the Boston Three Party?  Will a team with Starbury and Sheed spontaneously combust?  Inquiring minds want to know.

Now to the steal portion of our show.  Ron Artest aka Ron Ron is headed to La La land. That my friends is called a steal.  People want to play for a champion.  The question hanging over the preemptive favorites for the Finals is this?  Are there enough shots with Gasol, Kobe, Odom, and now Ron Ron?  Gasol publicly lobbied for more touches in the midst of the playoffs, and he was very diplomatic about it.  Stank-0 doubts Ron Ron will have that much subtlety.

If nothing else, the next season for the Lakers will be highly entertaining on the court and off it.
